Throughout September, Okaloosa County School District is proud to honor American Founders’ Month, a time dedicated to educating students about the visionaries who shaped our nation. Instruction across all grade levels will highlight the lives and legacies of key Founders, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, James Madison, John Jay, and Alexander Hamilton.
As part of this month-long celebration, schools will also observe several important commemorative events:
Patriot Day / 9/11 Heroes’ Day - September 11
At 7:46 AM CST, schools will hold a moment of silence to honor the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Schools across the district will honor Patriot Day with remembrance ceremonies, patriotic pep rallies, lunches with first responders and members of the military, and lessons about September 11th, 2001 in homeroom classes. Middle and high school students enrolled in Civics and Government courses will receive at least 45 minutes of instruction focused on:
The history and impact of global terrorism
A timeline of the 9/11 attacks
The heroism of first responders and civilians
The nationwide humanitarian response
Balancing civil liberties with national security
Constitution Day - September 17
In accordance with federal law, all public schools will provide instruction on the U.S. Constitution, helping students understand the foundation of our democratic government.
Celebrate Freedom Week - September 22 - 26
Florida Statute requires three hours of instruction in each social studies class during Celebrate Freedom Week. Students will engage in a deep study of the Declaration of Independence, culminating in a recitation of its Preamble to affirm the ideals of liberty and justice.
